The Arts

Canajoharie High School houses the area's premier theater, the Arkell Performing Arts Center. Through the generosity of the Arkell Foundation, a high school auditorium was transformed into a true performing arts center. And since its inception, the center has played host to many theatrical and musical performances throughout the year.

In addition the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Drama Club presents about three-four shows a year: Fall (usually a comedy or drama), Spring (consisting of plays by local students, and this year a Children's Olio show as well), and the Summer musical. They also produce S.P.O.C. festival hosted at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady every spring. While the school year shows are open to Fort Plain and Canajoharie  students grades 6-12, the summer show is open to all ages and all communities. The summer performance are often the biggest, with a multi generational cast.

But that’s not where the arts in Canajoharie stop. Local philanthropists have generously endowed the school and the community with an incredible array of facilities and artwork.

The Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures.

The Arkell Museum shows the rich history of the area and houses works by Winslow Homer and George Inness

The Museum Learning Initiative offers direct links to 69 museums and cultural organization programs in the Upper Hudson Valley Region.
