Middle School Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

October, 2010

If you spot a student at East Hill Middle School sporting a red ribbon this week, it’s because they’ve pledged to be drug free.

The middle school SADD chapter is sponsoring a week of special events to celebrate Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country Middle school SADD advisor Sherri Buteau said the red ribbon has come to symbolize zero tolerance for alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use and a commitment to substance abuse prevention.

“We stand against destructive decisions. It’s a nation-wide program and we think that raising awareness about drug and alcohol will be beneficial to our students,” she said. “And, we can have a little fun in the process.”

The group will conduct a daily trivia contest awarding two winners each day with red ribbon water bottles filled with goodies. On Wednesday, the school encourages everyone to wear sneakers and a red shirt for "Don't let drugs sneak up on you" day; and on Friday, everyone is encouraged to wear the craziest socks they can find for "Sock it to drugs!" day. SADD also hosts a bake sale during lunch and recess with red ribbon baked goods. Canajoharie Central School District residents voted in support of the district’s 2011-12 school budget Tuesday by a vote of 306 to 156. The approved $18,823,340 plan calls for a $70,800 spending decrease from 2010-11 and a tax levy increase of no more than four percent.

“I’d like to thank all of our residents who came to the polls today,” said Superintendent Richard Rose. “
