During his holiday break, Phillip Leverett, a sixth grade student at Canajoharie Middle School, likes to read as much as he can. This year, his sister gave him a few books, including Around the World in 80 Days. Phillip liked it so much, it inspired him to create a float in the recent sixth grade book float in late January.
The sixth grade teachers recently directed their students to read a book and construct a float out of cardboard (or a cereal box) and any other materials they wanted. When they completed the project, the student paraded their floats around the school.
"It turned out really well and the students paraded their floats around the halls," said teacher Emily Cheney. "We ended up having a lot of winners because there were a lot of really nice floats."
The teachers graded the 70 sixth grade students based on neatness, time spent completing the project, and how well it represented the book.
Phillip said it took him about an hour to build his float, and he used everything from Styrofoam to craft sticks.
"The book I read had trains and boats as the main source of transportation, so I thought I'd make a train and boat," he said. "I liked the way it turned out."
