At 4:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6, the Canajoharie varsity swimming team invites parents, students, and members of the public to its meet against Albany Academy as they swim in honor of someone who has died from or survived cancer.
Although there is no charge for admission, they will still be accepting donations. Half of the proceeds go toward breast cancer, while the other half go toward the Kathleen “K.C.” Smith Congdon Scholarship Fund.
The event also features concessions and raffles.
“It’s going to be something we do every year as long as I’m coach; I think it’s great,” said Canajoharie swim coach Phil Horender. “We received a lot of anonymous donations so far. We’ve had so much support from the community and people outside the community, and I’m so grateful for that.”
The 20-person team received pink swim caps, food donations, and shirts from community members, and also plans to hang posters around the pool about who they are swimming for.
“It’s amazing because a lot of the kids know someone with cancer. A lot of them have been affected by it one way or another, and they’ve really gotten involved with this,” Mr. Horender said. “Our attendance is hit or miss and we’re hoping a lot of people show up and support the effort.”
Canajoharie High School will also host a similar event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 when the boys basketball team plays Fort Plain. There will be no admission, but donations will be accepted.
