Fifth grade students write to "pen pals" in CanadaPen pals image

The fifth grade students in Joan Kolodziej's class at East Hill Elementary School have a few new friends. As part of their language arts program, the 21 students are exchanging mail with 20 students from a fifth grade class at Similkameen Elementary School in Keremeos, B.C., Canada. The town is located near the U.S. border and about five hours east of Vancouver.

The students exchange real letters, which take about two weeks to reach the school in Canada. So far, the classes have exchanged postcards, letters, and photographs. Many of the children from Canada mentioned playing hockey and soccer, eating pizza and enjoying music. The students are Canajoharie are currently awaiting a batch of letters with pictures of the Canadian children in their Halloween costumes.
