Last year, the fifth grade students at East Hill Elementary School collected 169,000 tabs off of soup, soda, and other cans for the Ronald McDonald House in Albany. The Ronald McDonald house took the tabs a recycling center and used the money. This year, fifth grade teacher Kathy Dopp is spearheading the effort again.
"At beginning of year, the kids count out 500 tabs and weigh them. Then, they keep collecting the tabs throughout the year," she said. "At the end of the year, I deliver them."
Any community member can
donate tabs. Residents can either send the tabs to school with their
child or drop them off at East Hill Elementary to the attention of
Kathy Dopp. The tabs can come off soda cans, dog food, cat food, or
soup.
Mrs. Dopp said she chose the Ronald McDonald House because two years
ago she had a student whose brother was in Albany Medical Center.
"Many people use the services at the Ronald McDonald House and we want to help them in any way we can," Mrs. Dopp added.
