SADD students participating in traffic safety contest

Nov. 17, 2011

In recognition of National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May, the S.A.D.D. students at Canajoharie High School have entered the Act Out Loud contest featuring three activities focusing on stronger teen driving laws. Held by the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), the contest looks to raise awareness about the dangers teens face on the road. The grand prize: $10,000.

"It's important for students to learn about the dangers they face on the road," said S.A.D.D advisor Carol Ann Hammons. "Accidents from people texting are on the rise and passenger distractions are a problem too."

According to the National Organizations for Youth Safety, car crashes are the leading cause of death and injuries for teens in the United States.

To win the prize, each school competes in three activities and receives points based on school participation and project quality. Points will also be awarded to the teams whose entries are selected in the top 25 for each activity, and additional points will be given to the winner of each activity.

The three activities include:

  • Communication Devices: Students must create an awareness message for a T-shirt that focuses on preventing the use of communication devices while driving.

  • Passenger Restrictions: Students must design a creative sign that promotes awareness for passenger restrictions.

  • Advocate: Students must create a Facebook yearbook and choose 10 friends to include in the album. The team with the most Facebook yearbook application downloads will be the winner.

Mrs. Hammons said if the students win the grand prize, they would use it to pay for the post-prom party.
