The Canajoharie varsity swimming team raised about $1,100 at its meet on Friday, Jan. 6, as they swam in honor of someone who has died from or survived cancer. Before the meet against Albany Academy, team members hung posters around the pool about who they were swimming for.
“That is a lot of money for one meet. The kids did very well and worked very hard," said Canajoharie swim coach Phil Horender. “Both sides of our stands were full. It was double for what we usually see.
"The kids thought it was such a positive
experience and I think they were shocked with how much we raised.
They wanted to know if we'll do it again in the future, and I said
we will."
Half of the proceeds from the event will go toward breast cancer,
while the other half go toward the Kathleen “K.C.” Smith Congdon
Scholarship Fund. During the event, the team wore donated pink swim
caps.
Canajoharie High School will also host a similar event at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 18 when the boys basketball team plays Fort Plain.
There will be no admission, but donations will be accepted.
